A new facility for youth league practices; a place to keep minds and bodies active and strong; a full size court with bleachers to host tournaments; a place to meet up with friends for a pick-up game of basketball.

The East Anaheim Gymnasium for the City of Anaheim, California, is all of these things and has become a center of activity on the east side of the city where community space was lacking.

The materials were kept minimal: exposed concrete block, painted steel and maple wood with generous glazed openings to maximize natural daylight.

Project cost: $3.5 million. Completed: 2006.
